A Medical Technologist from the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Tampakan in South Cotabato, Viryzza Janiola Lastima, used social media to encourage her fellow Tampakeños to cooperate in the fight against the emergence of COVID-19 cases in their municipality.

Lastima advocates to educate people about COVID-19. She aims to raise public awareness on its dangers in order to eradicate vaccine hesitancy, and eventually help frontliners like her flatten the curve.

In her Facebook post on June 12, the 22-year-old reiterated the increasing number of active cases in their area, as well as the general guidelines and schedules of the free swab tests and other health protocols.

Following the declaration of total lockdown when the Philippines was afflicted by COVID-19, she was deployed to the borders of their municipality. There, she worked as a medical team representative, checking medical certificates and quarantine passes of travelers for two months.

"I felt frightened when I encountered the first positive case which was a locally stranded individual from Cebu but at the same time, it was fulfilling and it made me realize more how important is my work as a medical technologist in my community," Lastima shared.

She also added that working in her hometown was the best decision she made.

Amid the rise of COVID-19 in the region, people still refuse to believe in its existence. Thus, frontliners from Tampakan continue to urge their fellow residents to follow health protocols.

In the past months, COVID-19 threats lowered in Tampakan, which caused the lifting of lockdowns and ease of restrictions. However, due to frequent mass gatherings, cases have begun to increase again.

Currently, South Cotabato has the highest COVID-19 cases among the provinces of the SOCCSKSARGEN region with 1,248 confirmed active cases.
